Why Make a Game

Eat Flaming Death Studios

Hello,

My name is Nick. I created a video game company. I was going through a bit of it at the time. My father had dimentia for over 3 years, and it was coming to the end. I went home to be with him and my family. We knew the end was near, but we didn't know how close.

I was sitting around, spending time with everyone and taking breaks. Being at home reminded me of the old group I was in as a film major. We called ourselved Eat Flaming Death Productions. EFD. The name came from a Firesign Theather comedy sketch. Which came from somewhere else.

Being at my old home for over a week ws a shock to the system. And I did what everybody does in a stressful situation like that. I started to pick up on old threads from former lives, and I created a video game company. I had a couple of false starts. Games that weren'y meant to be. At least, not yet.

I started this game with a simple idea. Woudln't it be fun to create a game where you are a bird that poops on people. I worked on it for a month, and then decided to research how common that idea is. It turns out almost everyone has made this game before. There are lots of absolute garbage games where you just fly around and poop.

And I was faced with a dilema: I either release the game I was working on as a boring game to tarnish my reputation, or I spend the time to make something glorious.

I went the route of glory.

I'm coming up on a year of development. All the jokes are created by humans. I am absolutely getting into AI assisted development. I know I can push a button, burn a few thousand dollars on AI, and have a finished game in a month. But it won't be glorious.

But I dont want to spend a decade making this. So, I am working on the happy middle. ANd that's what I hope to explore here. How to help people put the humanity in games, while letting AI do what it does best.

So yes, this all started as a coping mechanism to help me process the slow passing of my father. But a year later, I am more excited than ever about where things are going.
